Prime Minister and BC Premier and Science World unveil Science World ReGeneration
CASC recognizes new era for one of Canada’s 45 science centres
On Friday November 25th, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and British Columbia Premier Christy Clark joined Andrew Harries, Chair of Science World’s Board of Directors to reveal the results of the largest renovation in Science World’s history. The $35 million Science World ReGeneration in Vancouver was made possible by contributions of $10.5 million each from the federal and provincial governments.
CASC, on behalf of the Board of Directors, recognizes this tremendous achievement with a congratulatory letter to Science World and its partners. You can read the letter to Science World here: link(PDF).
Work on the ReGeneration program upgraded the building’s foundations and infrastructure, as well as improving its ecological footprint. Renovations included a 30,000 square foot expansion, encompassing a new lobby and additional gallery space. The newly greened building has also been outfitted with an 11,000 square foot green roof with a deck overlooking False Creek.
“Over the next 10 years, approximately one in eight job openings will be in a science-related
occupation,” said British Columbia’s Premier Christy Clark. “In order to maintain our competitive edge, it’s important we support Science World and their programs that foster the pursuit of science in our children and throughout the community, so we have bright young people to fill those jobs when they become available.”
Science World is raising $14 million from the community to complete the renovations, and has
approximately $3 million to go to reach its goal. The non-profit organization is looking to donors for the
remaining funds. As a token of appreciation to the community, admission to Science World at TELUS
World of Science was free on Saturday, December 3, 2011, with The James Dyson Foundation and
Encana sponsoring.
