TELUS World of Science Calgary Announces Final Exhibitions to be Hosted at 11th Street Location
July 20, 2010 – TELUS World of Science – Calgary is today announcing the final two exhibitions
that will be hosted at the 11th Street location, in advance of the move to the New Science Centre
near Deerfoot and Memorial in the fall of 2011. From October 9, 2010 to January 3, 2011, TELUS
World of Science will host two exhibits together for the first time: Einstein & Darwin. From
February 6, 2011 to June 27, 2011 as the last exhibition being hosted at the existing location, the
organization will welcome Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition.
“We have now begun our final year of operations in our existing location and our intention is to
end our stay here on a very high note. By hosting the Einstein and Darwin exhibitions together –
for the first time ever – we are offering Calgarians and Southern Albertans a critically important
view of arguably the two most influential scientists in history.” Said Jennifer Martin, President &
CEO, TELUS World of Science – Calgary. “Following Einstein & Darwin, the Titanic: Artifact
Exhibition will be a spectacular finale to our 43 year run in this facility.”
Opening October 9th, the Einstein and Darwin exhibitions were developed and produced by the
American Museum of Natural History and are the most comprehensive exhibitions ever
presented about the life and times of the two icons.
The Einstein exhibition illustrates how Albert Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity paved the
way to unleashing atomic energy, his work on the photoelectric effect led directly to the
development of vacuum tubes and integrated circuits and eventually to the computer
revolution, and, how his explanation of Brownian motion created a new understanding of the
size and shape of molecules that ultimately helped to unlock the secrets of DNA.
The Darwin exhibition offers an engaging and enlightening exploration of the extraordinary life
and mind of Charles Darwin whose curiosity, observations and discoveries nearly 150 years ago
forever changed the perception of the origin and nature of our own species as well as the
myriad of other species on this planet and launched modern biological science.
Opening February 6, 2011, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibit is a compelling historical exhibition of
actual artifacts recovered from the wreckage, that takes visitors on a journey back in time,
allowing them to experience Titanic like never before. This blockbuster exhibition has been one
of the most popular attractions in the world, seen by millions in major cities around the globe.
Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition is a rare opportunity to encounter the legend of the Titanic firsthand
in an engaging, interactive experience.
To prepare for Einstein & Darwin, the majority of TELUS World of Science will be closed from
September 7th to October 8th. The Creative Kids Museum will remain open to the public.
Currently, TELUS World of Science – Calgary is hosting the internationally renowned BODY
WORLDS & The Brain exhibition. In the fall of 2011, the new TELUS World of Science – Calgary
will open near the intersection of Deerfoot and Memorial. The new TELUS World of Science will
be Canada’s first new science centre in more than 25 years. It will be a different kind of science
centre – a true resource for all Calgarians that will help define our city as the innovation and
imagination capital of Canada. No other attraction in Canada will offer the kinds of mindexpanding
experiences available every day at the new TELUS World of Science – Calgary.
