Guy Labine appointed Science North CEO

Scott Lund, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Science North, today announced the appointment of Guy Labine as Chief Executive Officer of Science North effective May 7.  Labine is currently Chief Operating Officer of Science North.  He will succeed Jim Marchbank who steps down as CEO on May 6.

Lund said Labine was chosen unanimously by the Science North Board of Trustees after a national and international search for a new CEO.  Lund said the Board engaged a search firm to pursue the best choice for the position.  The search firm advertised nationally in Canada and made contact with science centre professionals in Canada and abroad.  The final candidates for the position included professionals working in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia including existing science centre CEOs.

“The Board is delighted that the best candidate to be CEO of Science North came from within.  Guy Labine has demonstrated his great leadership qualities over a decade of work at Science North.  We are very confident he is the right person to lead our science centre into the future.  He has energy, a great love of science learning and great leadership skills” said Lund.

Guy Labine says he is very excited to take on the challenge of becoming Science North CEO.  “I'm thrilled with the opportunity and I look forward to working with the board, staff, volunteers and stakeholders.  Our mission is to involve people in the relationship between science and everyday life and I look forward to expanding our service in pursuit of that mission.  We will reach out to new audiences across Northern Ontario and offer programs to a broader demographic of our population” said Labine.

Guy Labine has been COO of Science North for 18 months.  Before that he was Director of Business Development for the science centre, responsible for leading the centre’s external sales business, fundraising and grantsmanship.  He led the science centre in establishing a travelling exhibit business which this year will earn more revenue than admissions sales.  He also led the successful fundraising for Dynamic Earth.

Just last week Labine completed a one year post graduate program of the Noyce Leadership Institute.  The program was specifically designed to enhance the leadership skills of senior science centre professionals.  His colleagues in the course included science centre leaders from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Denmark.

Before joining Science North in 2001 he was General Manager of the Sudbury Regional Development Corporation.  He previously worked for the Town of Rayside Balfour and the federal government.

 


This year Guy Labine was the recipient of the Community Builders Award for Economic Development in Sudbury.  He was also presented one of Laurentian University’s 50 Alumni Achievement Awards celebrating the university’s 50 year history.
