MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE LOC AND IPC OF THE 6SCWC
The weather in Cape Town is changing from a cool Winter to a bright and refreshing Spring, and we are ready to welcome 90 delegates to the Pre-Congress Workshop and 350 delegates to the main Congress. The great whales have started to arrive, the Namaqualand daisies will soon be in full bloom, and Cape Town, which has recently been short listed as one of the Design Capitals of the World, is bracing itself for a cultural onslaught second to none!
For those delegates who are still undecided as to whether or not they should attend, we have plenty to offer you: a stimulating technical programme in a stunning venue, some very unusual social events, and unrivalled opportunities for networking, not only with your established colleagues but with a whole new group of science centre enthusiasts from Africa. We also offer stunning pre- and post-congress tours, day tours, and an opportunity to befriend one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
South Africa has eleven official languages (plus body language), but the 6SCWC will be held in English (plus body language). However, in order to ensure that you are able to understand some of our diverse local vocabulary, we have appended to the website a list of some ‘South Africanisms’ that you should learn before you arrive. They include: ‘ayoba’ (something cool and exciting), ‘eish’ (expression of surprise) or ‘jislaaik’ (expression of extreme surprise), ‘indaba’ (traditional meeting), ‘kif’ (great, wonderful), ‘lekker’ (very good), and ‘uBuntu’ (feeling of togetherness), all of which apply to the 6SCWC.
We encourage all session convenors and speakers to communicate with one another over the next five weeks so that you can fine tune your presentations and make them sharp, relevant and inspirational. We look forward to seeing you in the Mother City!
