Virtual Museum of Canada: Community Stories Investment Program

The Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC), part of the Canadian Museum of History, is the largest source of online content and experiences shared by large and small Canadian museums and heritage organizations. The Community Stories Investment Program helps smaller Canadian museums and heritage organizations work with their communities to develop virtual exhibits that engage online audiences in the stories, past and present, of Canada’s communities. Funding of $15,000 per project is provided. Canadian museums and heritage organizations, including equivalent Indigenous peoples’ organizations, are eligible to apply. The deadline for receipt of proposals is February 6, 2019. Program guidelines, budget and production schedule templates, and the application form may be downloaded from the VMC website.

The Canadian Space Agency is collaborating with the European Space Agency and Kids Code Jeunesse to bring Astro Pi to Canada. Get ready for a unique challenge that could take your code into space!

    About the activity

The European Astro Pi Challenge is an annual science and coding competition where students have the opportunity to develop code that could be run on the International Space Station's (ISS's) unique Raspberry Pi computers, called Astro Pis. The 2018/2019 challenge will run throughout David Saint-Jacques' mission.

Two different complexity levels make the Astro Pi Challenge accessible to students with or without coding experience.

    Mission Zero

For Mission Zero, student teams write a simple program to display a message on the Astro Pi computer to astronauts on board the Space Station. No special equipment or coding skills are needed, and all entries that follow program rules are guaranteed to be run in space!

    Mission Space Lab

For Mission Space Lab, students design and program a scientific experiment to be run on an Astro Pi computer. The best experiments will be deployed on the ISS, and teams will have the opportunity to analyze and report on the results.

    Who can participate?
Mission Zero is open to teams of Canadian and European students up to 14 years old. Each team must include between two and four students. Mission Space Lab is open to teams of Canadian and European students up to 19 years old. Each team must include between two and six students and be supervised by a teacher or mentor.

Canadian students are allowed to participate as Canada is a cooperating state of the European Space Agency.

    How to participate

Kids Code Jeunesse organizes workshops in science centres and museums across the country; and provide online resources so that any classroom can take part. You can also visit the AstroPi website to register online.

Guylaine Archambault, General Director of the Armand-Frappier Museum, was recently featured in an article highlighting her as the ‘Personality of the Week’ for her success in becoming the museum’s Director. She started out at the museum as a Facilitator; today, she is piloting a 10 million dollar project for the relocation and expansion of the museum.

The Armand-Frappier Museum was established to educate the public about Dr. Armand Frappier, a pioneer in the field of preventative medicine and vaccination in Quebec. Growing up with a veterinarian father and teacher mother, Archambault was surrounded by science and education, thus stirring up her initial interest in science education and facilitation. Over the past 20 years, Guylaine Archambault followed the progress of the museum and also earned an MBA along the way.

She has led the institution to broaden its mandate, presenting exhibitions dealing with medicine and science, including the Us and Them: From prejudice to racism exhibit which raises scientific perspective on racism and why the phenomenon occurs in societies across the globe. She proudly leads her team to promote the museum’s mission to disseminate and value knowledge, promote critical thinking, inspire innovation and ultimately help shape an inclusive and sustainable future.

The funds will be used to update and expand the ExxonMobil Oil and Gas Gallery, an exhibit designed to educate visitors about the oil and gas industry in the province, and will be expected to open in 2020. These upgrades include larger gallery space, revitalized exhibits, and the installation of an interactive drilling simulator that will provide a virtual reality experience of Hebron platform drilling operations.

“We hope it inspires our young people to develop their talents and pursue careers in the industry,” said ExxonMobil Canada president Carman Mullins.

The funds come specifically from ExxonMobil Canada Properties and the Hebron Project Employers’ Association.

On January 24th, the Ontario Science Centre officially launched its birthday celebrations with Elizabeth Dowdeswell, the lieutenant-governor of Ontario, who is the centre’s honorary patron. The science centre revealed its plans for 2019 and launched their new social media campaign inviting for the public to share their moments, memorable experiences and photos.

"In 1969, the Province of Ontario had the foresight to pioneer a new type of cultural attraction — an interactive science museum," said Maurice Bitran, CEO and chief science officer at the Science Centre, in a news release. "This year, we are fortunate to celebrate 50 years of welcoming dreamers, thinkers and doers through our doors with the lieutenant-governor — an active champion of science and science communication — as our honorary patron. Together with Her Honour and our visitors, we not only appreciate the centre's past, we look to boldly create its future."
