The Saskatchewan Science Centre is trying something new. They’ve done a camp for kids for years, but now they’re taking that camp on the road, coming to Yorkton for their first satellite day camp.

With the goal of increasing scientific knowledge in the Lower Mainland, Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) partnered with Telus World of Science to create the KPU-Science World Speaker Series. In the third year of this successful partnership, the speaker series started with a journey through the Amazon on July 25. Read more.

Once again, CASC encourages members and friends to participate in this global event that coincides with the United Nation’s World Science Day for Peace and Development.  

The goal of this international event is to “celebrate and demonstrate our institutions as the Earth’s most influential combined force for engaging the public with science, technology, related civic decision-making, and direct action to solve the critical issues facing the planet”. 

There are several ways you can participate:

• 1.      Between now and November 10, gather your audiences to participate in a global citizen science project to map mosquito breeding grounds.  The website provides tools and resources to implement the program, including a staff training recorded webinar
• 2.      Contact your local media to invite them to your institution to talk about the impact that we collectively have in Canada.
• 3.      Invite your local MPs, MPPs, MLAs, Municipal Representatives, Band Council members and other important leaders to visit your Science Centre on November 10.
• 4.      Use social media leading on November 10 to advise your audiences that it is International Science Centre and Science Museum Day (be sure to tag #ISCSMD and @CASC_ACCS so we can track and share your posts).
• 5.      Add your Science Centre’s story to the ISCSMD map to demonstrate the international impact that we all have collectively.

The Government of Canada is investing $187,800 in Science North over the next three years to engage Northern Ontario Indigenous youth in science and technology.

Science North is among the recipients of funding through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)’s 2017 PromoScience Program.

This funding will allow Science North to bring hands-on science and technology experiences that are culturally relevant and meaningful to Indigenous audiences. The Outreach Programs engage children and youth in fun, interactive science-based activities. Through repeat visits, either in person or through video conferencing, Science North Scientists and the First Nations students and teachers can keep building on the science and technology experiences.

On July 13th the Musée Armand-Frappier located in Laval, PQ held a press conference to announce $390,000 in government funding that will contribute to the development of the museums next permanent exhibition.

"We welcome this important financial support and warmly thank the Government of Quebec. The support will allow us to create a permanent exhibition that will make known the work of Dr. Frappier and will shine the mission of our institution, to promote understanding of scientific issues related to human health,” spoke Guylaine Archambault, CEO of the Musée Armand-Frappier. “The exhibition will be highly technological, interactive and resolutely contemporary, in order to allow our visitors to marvel at the great beauty and fragility of the human being. It will lead visitors to realize that science alone does not bring all solutions and that everyone has to take care of himself. This was Dr. Frappier's vision.”

The exhibition, with its work title “À échelle humaine” ( On a Human Scale), will come to life over the next two years and will be presented to visitors in 2020, when the Museum's new facilities open on the site of the Cosmodome.

Within days of Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation, a new national brand was launched to celebrate ingenuity in Canada. 

Known as Ingenium – Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation, this corporate brand encompasses three national institutions — the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, and the Canada Science and Technology Museum.

Where can you make a simple circuit, create a critter, spin a giant web and take in local history by way of a tree trunk? The Ontario Science Centre, of course! 

On July 19, to celebrate Ontario 150, the Science Centre officially opened Inventorium, a new hands-on learning space, and unveiled The Maple Leaf Forever Tree, an eight-foot, historically-significant hand-carved wood sculpture that pays tribute to Toronto's vibrant history.

"There are few things more powerful than creating something yourself – especially when it's a product of your own imagination," said Maurice Bitran, Ph.D., CEO, Ontario Science Centre. "These new visitor experiences showcase what's possible when we combine experimentation, collaboration and critical thinking. Inventorium encourages visitors to flex their creative muscles and bring their ideas to life. And The Maple Leaf Forever Tree illustrates the beauty achievable when taking a collective approach to a creative challenge."
