    Timed to coincide with Science Literacy Week 2016, a new survey from the Ontario Science Centre shows that although most Canadians are confident in their grasp of key scientific issues, there are significant gaps in their actual understanding of the science behind them. The survey, conducted by Leger, asked Canadians about their scientific knowledge of climate change, vaccinations and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The results show that being familiar with the science behind an issue does not necessarily equate to understanding. Read more

    The national cleanup initiative is a joint effort of the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Canada. According to a release from WWF, more than 2,000 cleanups have been organized across the country in 2016 so far. That’s the most amount of events ever registered in the program in one calendar year.     The specimen was discovered by Dr. Riccardo Levi-Setti on the Manuels River in the early 1980s. The Manuels River Natural Heritage Society says the fossil is believed to have been buried alive.

    “Complete trilobites such as this one are extraordinarily rare, making this large and highly detailed specimen extremely valuable, financially, scientifically and aesthetically,” the society wrote in a news release. Read more

    The London Regional Children’s Museum is facing a deadline.

    With the lease on its Wharncliffe Road building up in about a year, work may begin then to convert the 30,000-square-foot building into office or residential space.

    “We have been in this community for 40 years and we want to find the perfect space,” said Amanda Conlon, the museum’s executive director.

    “We have been searching for a new home since we sold the building. We have been diligently looking.” Read more

    It's a whale of a mystery that scientists across the country are trying to solve — and one from the Vancouver Aquarium is leading the way.

    Valeria Vergara, a research scientist at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, is trying to find out why the Beluga whale population in the St. Lawrence Estuary is decreasing so rapidly.

    She and a handful of other Canadian scientists studied the whales in July and August, travelling to the area to explore the mystery first-hand. Read more

    Scientists are combing the waters in Canada's Arctic searching for pieces of plastic so tiny that, in some cases, they can't be seen with the naked eye.

    Since July, researchers with the Vancouver Aquarium and Department of Fisheries and Oceans staff have been traversing four Arctic regions on board a Russian scientific icebreaker and two Canadian Coast Guard ships. Read more

    The Call for Submissions is now open for the 20th International Play Association Triennial World Conference, taking place in Calgary, Alberta, Canada from September 13 to 16, 2017.

    Anyone who happens to walk around the Leduc #1 Energy Discovery Centre might notice a bit of a change.

    Almost the entire building has now been retrofitted with brand new LED lights, which will save the centre a substantial amount on their energy bill. Read more
